Kana Ueda
Kana Ueda is an artist who has consistently explored the subtle shifts and ambiguities that arise between the original and its reproduction through printmaking, questioning how we perceive and recognize images. Born in Hyogo Prefecture, she studied Fashion Design at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, and later pursued Printmaking at Osaka College of Art. Since then, she has worked primarily with print media, also engaging with photography and video. Based in the Kansai region, she has actively exhibited across Japan, steadily gaining recognition.

In 2025, Ueda received the Grand Prize at the 4th PATinKyoto: Kyoto Print Triennale, a major achievement that brought her further into the spotlight. She is now regarded as one of the most promising young artists of her generation.

Ueda first exhibited at Gallery Nomart in the 2020 group show U30 – Whom do you suspect?, an open-call exhibition for emerging artists. After participating in three subsequent group shows, this exhibition marks her first solo show at Nomart. It features two major series: "particle" and "#illusion #genei".

In the particle series, Ueda reinterprets the portrait genre through a dual framework: the dot-based visual logic of printmaking and the scientific notion that all matter is made of particles. These works, composed of microscopic units that coalesce into larger images, compel viewers to reexamine how we visually construct the world.

The #illusion #genei series takes its inspiration from the blurred images briefly seen while content is still loading on social media platforms. Capturing these ephemeral images through coarse halftone silkscreen printing, the resulting works resemble mirrors that evoke personal memories and emotions in the viewer.

Both series emerge from Ueda’s long-standing interest in the act of “seeing,” the process of reproduction, and the uncertainties that lie in between. This exhibition also presents new print works created in collaboration with Nomart’s printmaking studio—a first for the artist—offering fresh approaches to the medium of print.

With this solo exhibition, Kana Ueda challenges the foundations of visual perception. We are confident her work will astonish and move audiences. We warmly invite you to experience this remarkable debut at Gallery Nomart.
