Kanae Tominaga
Tominaga has been creating prints and print-based works as a nested practice, adapting the processes of printmaking to images and words. Even in this painting-focused exhibition, that structure remains intact. A new development here is the emergence of the witch―a figure shaped by stereotypical representations of heresy disseminated through the rise of print technology. In this sense, the witch belongs to the genealogy of printmaking.

Tominaga’s work engages in a recursive reflection on the medium itself―its historical and structural complexity. At the same time, viewed through the lens of feminist and queer theory, the witch becomes a symbol of resistance, and the work, a kind of homage to those who defy normative frameworks.

Techniques such as transfer, repetition, and the casual juxtaposition of disparate images embed queerness not merely as subject, but as form. These gestures attempt to bridge historical technologies and contemporary embodied experience.

Rather than producing aesthetic “facts,” this exhibition generates a distinct form of knowledge. In doing so, Tominaga positions herself as a mediator―moving between past and present, navigating the layered histories of visual media.
