Karu Miyoshi
Miyoshi’s practice has long been rooted in exploring concepts such as the “extension of the body” and the “sharing of one’s body with others,” materializing these ideas into physical space through performance and soft-sculpture processes. Although Miyoshi has primarily presented works in real-time performance settings, this exhibition marks his first solo show in a gallery format. “Giant Kickoff” brings together Dai-Shūkyū (Gigantic Soccer) — a major work that represents the current culmination of a series Miyoshi has been developing since 2022 — alongside a constellation of sculptural and visual forms that emerged throughout its creation. Gigantic Soccer is a performance in which a colossal 25-meter inflatable soccer player, designed by Miyoshi, competes in a match. Five performers enter the interior of this giant humanoid inflatable, each operating a specific bodily function — the torso or individual limbs — and move collectively in synchrony. Together, they kick a 2.8-meter ball, attempting to shoot it into the goal while engaging in dynamic offense and defense with aesthetics of slowness. At first glance, viewers are struck by the overwhelming visual impact and humor of the work. Yet as the match unfolds, its deceptively simple but highly precise choreography reveals multiple layers of perspective. Through a drastic shift in spatial and temporal scale, the familiar game of soccer begins to resemble a phenomenon of the natural world. The flow of electrical signals from the brain and the connective movement of muscles seem to extend beyond each performer’s individual body or will, expanding into a shared organism. In visualizing how agency shifts and transforms within a network of individuals, the work sharply illuminates both the universal physicality of the world and the raw immediacy of human presence. A match of Gigantic Soccer was also held in November 2025 at Kabukicho Cinecity Square, located near the exhibition venue Decameron. Archival video documentation of the match will be shown as part of the exhibition. We invite you to experience the subtle yet compelling dynamics of unruly relationships that extend from this exhibition into everyday life.
