Karyn Nakamura
Karyn Nakamura is a 22-year-old artist based in NYC and originally from Shibuya, Tokyo. She recently finished a B.S. in Art and Design at MIT. In her short career, she has carried out multiple large-scale technical installations, from a 10-story, 400-wide building projection installation to an abandoned pub reopened to the public as a 20-channel video performance running for 3 months as well as smaller, slightly less official works like an analog TV left in a dorm bathroom sink and a LED sign semi-permanently installed in a hallway at MIT.

Originally entering to MIT to study physics and history, she developed a practice out of playing with all of the technology she was surrounded by– from the most advanced research in the world to the obsolete devices collected from dumpsters.

She constantly experiments with technology, acknowledging, but refusing to be restricted by rules, history, and common sense. Stripping down and dissecting gadgets, transforming them into fragile, nightmare cable salads, she tries to disentangle black-boxed intricacies and lay bare the components, their relations, and the structures, that support a technology for it to work as expected– something often taken for granted.

In this exhibition, Karyn presents another handmade video signal distribution system mixing various materials that bring to the front, the hardware that goes into the mediation of a message through technology.
