Katie Layman
"Words to Live By" marks the second exhibition from USA-born artist Katie Layman, currently based in Hiroshima, Japan, showcased at Margin. Presenting five new oil on canvas pieces alongside five drawings, Layman's unique blend of realism and digital elements delves into the themes of transience and eternity. Centered around the motif of a cemetery, this collection symbolically represents the interaction with non-playable characters (NPCs) in video games, reminiscent of visiting gravesites and reliving memories. Layman skillfully intertwines precise brushwork with digital motifs characteristic of video games to create works that trap memories of the deceased and their families in a world of eternity. Layman's artistic process reflects introspection and prayer, and invites viewers to immerse themselves in the intricate brushstrokes and the textured emotions they convey.
