Katsuyuki Takahashi
Katsuyuki Takahashi, born and residing in Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture in 1967, is an oil painter. He graduated from the Faculty of Education at Fukushima University in 1992 and completed his postgraduate studies at Fukushima University in 1995. In 1993, he received the Fourth Lictex Biennale Grand Prize, and he participated in the VOCA Exhibition at the Ueno Mori Art Museum in 1994 and 2003. In 2005, he exhibited in "New Spirits Fukushima - Around the Story" at the Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art, and in 2016 and 2017, he participated in the Ueno Mori Art Museum Grand Prize Exhibition. Currently, he continues his artistic activities while working as an art teacher.

Takahashi's works are characterized by surreal narratives set in a fictional "city," featuring locations such as hotels, hospitals, meeting places, castles, and ruins. The stories unfold with characters moving and transitioning to the next scene in an absurd and allegorical manner. The textures, resembling three-dimensional, lifelike tree trunks, created using synthetic lacquer, add a sense of vitality to the supposed imaginary stories, making them realistically stand before the viewer.

This exhibition will showcase 16 pieces, including new works from "Bottom of the Hole," inspired by a passage from the New Testament (Matthew 15:14) that refers to Bruegel's painting "The Blind Leading the Blind."

The series reflects Takahashi's response to the often-seen dialogue in news programs since the spread of the COVID-19 virus, capturing the essence of "The Blind Leading the Blind." Starting from this inspiration, Takahashi engaged in reproductions and arrangements. While the "city" he has been creating for the past 30 years has expanded horizontally, this time, the scenes unfold vertically. The story that unfolds at the "bottom of the hole," where blind people and their guides have fallen, is a continuation of a famous fable.
