Maki Gallery is pleased to announce "Nothing New Under the Sun," its second solo exhibition with Los Angeles-based artist Kaz Oshiro, opening Saturday, November 18 at Tennoz II, Tokyo.

Born in Okinawa in 1967, Oshiro utilizes traditional painting materials, such as wood, canvas, and acrylic paint, to create hyperrealistic reproductions of domestic and industrial objects. He further enhances the verisimilitude of his works by adding elements of wear and tear, yet these stains and scratches are products of the artist's imagination and stand on their own as carefully calculated abstract compositions. Oshiro pursues this idea in an even more understated, subtractive manner in his California Calligraphy series—sleek rectangular canvases that emulate the streaks and scribbles left on the body of a car shrouded in arid Angeleno dust. Oshiro's discrete yet captivating creations evince the delicate balance the artist strikes between controlled craftsmanship and gestural mark-making in his practice.

Featuring over 40 new works, Nothing New Under the Sun is a major show marking Oshiro's first solo presentation in three years. We welcome you to observe the artist's quietly poignant, genre-defying works firsthand at the gallery.
