Kazumasa Nakagawa
Kazumasa Nakagawa (1893-1991), a recipient of the Order of Culture, deeply valued the concept of "mouvement." In the artistic sense, mouvement refers to the elements that guide the viewer's gaze and create a sense of motion through lines, colors, and composition. For Nakagawa, however, it also signified emotion. Nakagawa believed that capturing and incorporating emotion onto the canvas was the essence of true artistic expression. This emotional drive led to deformation, or distortion and exaggeration, which in turn created mouvement across the canvas, conveying the artist's intended depiction to the viewer. The form, or shape, unifies the canvas while maintaining this dynamic energy. This exhibition highlights Nakagawa's energetic summer works, especially the sunflowers, inviting viewers to experience a unique interpretation of mouvement.
