Keisuke Yamashita
Medel Gallery Shu is pleased to present Planed Happenstance #02, a solo exhibition by Keisuke Yamashita, on view from August 15 to 27.

Keisuke Yamashita is an artist who works with a distinctive technique called “Layered,” in which he repeatedly applies color to wood and then planes it down. By layering and shaving multiple colors, he reveals unexpected gradations and complex forms, continuously exploring new palettes and contours. His works—born from the interplay of natural materials and layered color—give visible form to intangible concepts such as “in-betweenness,” “space,” and “background,” weaving a unique visual language that traverses sculpture, painting, and installation.

Each of Yamashita’s works is a one-of-a-kind result of embracing chance. Coupled with his charming, vibrant palette, his creations seem to gently illuminate a hopeful outlook on life. At the heart of his practice is the word “enjoy”—a concept that frequently appears in his own statements and one that is embodied by the animals featured in his works.

What might you discover among these creatures, who seem to carry the artist’s joyful spirit?
We hope this exhibition offers a moment to reflect on the “invisible spaces” within ourselves—found in the accidental layers between form and color.
