Kenichi Asano
Kenichi Asano is a sculptor who creates wood sculptures based on the themes of "possession" and "unification" of traditional Japanese arts, blending them with contemporary pop culture elements. After graduating from Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music, he studied karakuri dolls while working in Buddhist statue restoration. Based on his professional knowledge and experience, he creates new sculptures using digital sculpting techniques with 3D modeling in the process of creation.

Asano's works have their roots in the tension and mystery that he felt as a child at temples, shrines, and other austere spaces where prayers and awe were directed, where something might be lurking.

He has created his own unique sculptures by expressing the realistic body flexing and muscular movements that come from his real-life experience of martial arts, which he has taken up as a hobby, and by using the classical techniques of wood carving, lacquer, and glue that he learned while engaged in the restoration of Buddhist statues. His works are a coexistence of traditional techniques and contemporary culture.

Marebito," the title of this exhibition, is a term in the philosophy of the Japanese scholar of Japanese literature and folklore, Nobuo Orikuchi, referring to a person or deity who comes from a foreign land at a certain time. The "marebito," whose faces are hidden by masks and helmets, are extraordinary and alien beings.

Asano's work shows that in today's society, as people obscure their existence on the Internet by logging in anonymously, they may also become “Marebito".

At the exhibition, Asano will present a series of large wood sculptures “Marebito" and a series of figurines that are scaled down and deformed from the series.
