Kenta Toda
Toda is a self-taught shoemaker who has been active in Tokyo since 2022, learning the craft of sneaker production. With a strong interest in the symbolic nature, physicality, and design of sneakers, which have become "products of meaning" in the complex and intertwined cultural spheres of sports, fashion, and music, he creates works inspired by these aspects. Through his unique perspective, he reinterprets sneakers in terms of shape, function, materials, production methods, and usage, aiming to question the symbols and bodily sensations that sneakers, as symbols of popular culture, inherently possess and that thinly govern people's lives.

In this exhibition, Toda will present 13 works that explore the boundaries of sneakers as objects and the act of "wearing," based on the highly contextual sneaker culture and the context of customization as its byproduct.

The exhibition invites a reexamination of the images we have associated with the term "sneaker" and attempts to liberate sneakers from the established value standards dictated by marketing. Moreover, through this exhibition, Toda proposes positioning sneakers (shoes) as a form of conceptual expression, sometimes quoting from the existing context of sneaker culture supported by popular culture and at times deviating from it, thereby defining the expressive form as "hyper sole" within the framework of an art movement rooted in popular culture.
