In 2018, the initiative “Kigaku – XYLOLOGY”, dedicated to both the inheritance and renewal of woodcarving culture, was launched with a sculpture exhibition by fifteen artists at the former residence of Denchu Hirakushi, the founder of modern wood sculpture.
With “wood” as the common medium, the project sought to revisit the fundamental questions shared by those who work with this material, encouraging new developments in the culture of wood sculpture.
Since then, each participating artist has continued to deepen their exploration of woodcarving expression. This ongoing pursuit has now led to a new exhibition titled “Kigaku – Re(a)lize –”, which provides a fresh platform for their presentations.
