Kinzo Hirose (Ekin)
Mysterious genius Kinzo Hirose, a Tosa painter who left behind numerous theatrical screens and other works from the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji period, has long been known locally in Kochi by the nickname "Ekin-san." His paintings on folding screens, which were painted in a style different from that of other painters of the same period, are still displayed at shrines and other places in Kochi for several days during summer festivals. The horrifying theatrical scenes that emerge from the darkness by candlelight leave a vivid impression on viewers.

This is the first large-scale exhibition of these works outside of Kochi Prefecture in about 50 years. The exhibition introduces the exceptional individuality and charm of Ekin, who lived in Tosa at the end of the Edo period and left behind such unique works as folding screen paintings and ema lanterns, through a number of his representative works.
