Koichi Watanabe
Koichi Watanabe came across a tree with strangely shaped leaves resembling a heart in a botanical journal in Hong Kong in 2017, which is referred to by different names in different sources. One example from the Edo period is Daisuke Baba who called it contrayerba, meaning detox plant. This time, however, different sources list different plants as contrayerba.
Contrayerba In Dreaming - Detox Plants-History tells the history of nameless plants that have been given the role of medicine and the name contrayerba, becoming commodities with a price attached to them. Watanabe visits the Netherlands, Indonesia, Wakayama, and Mexico in pursuit of an idea that has been slipping in and out of sight for a very long time.
Photographs of different sizes, video clips, a 17th-century botanical journal, and a medicinal herb encyclopedia are included in the exhibition which questions what is contrayerba.
