Koji Hatakeyama
Based in Takaoka, Toyama, which has a long history of casting, Koji Hatakeyama (1956-) has shown creativity in casting metal forms using bronze as the material. Hatakeyama's works are characterized by their restrained modeling and realistic expressions. Although cast metal is a technique that allows for the creation of complex shapes according to the mold, Hatakeyama's desire to "cast the very existence of bronze" and his sense of modeling are expressed in simple forms composed of straight lines and slight curves. He then breathes life into the bronze form by creating color and texture through chemical reactions with chemicals and heat. This exhibition introduces more than 60 pieces of Hatakeyama's work, from his early years to his newest work, in which he seeks to establish his originality and independence as well as the possibilities of metal casting.
