Koshiro Kihara
Artdyne has relocated to Nihonbashi Kayabacho, close to the financial hub of the city, and will reopen for business on Saturday, 15 April. As a first step, Koshiro Kihara will present his first solo exhibition in Tokyo, ”Ugoite, Tsukamenai,” from 15 Apr (Sat) to 7 May (Sun) 2023.
Kihara Koshiro was born in 1997 in Hyogo Prefecture as the elder brother of identical twins and completed his postgraduate studies in Fine Arts at Onomichi City University in 2022. He currently works with his twin brother, Kenshiro Kihara, in a joint studio in Hyogo.
The mysterious mollusk-like motifs painted by Kihara give the viewer a sense of frustration, as they have clear contours but no real substance. The paintings, with their peculiar shapes, vivid colors, and glossy surfaces, seem smooth and wet, evoking a certain eroticism, drawing in and out the viewer's gaze as if they were breathing.
In these mysterious works, which bring about a strange sense of familiarity and a faint sense of guilt, Kihara has consistently attempted to coexist the opposing elements of abstraction and figuration. By exploring the various spaces where opposites such as 'fact' vs. 'fiction,' 'and moment' vs. 'eternity' intersect, and by attempting to reduce them to two dimensions, he attempts to show the existence of a realm that cannot be expressed in words.
In his first solo exhibition in Tokyo, Kohshiro Kihara will present eight oil paintings, including a 100-size canvas. We hope you will take this opportunity to view and appreciate the works. As a second part of the opening, a solo exhibition by Kihara's twin brother, Kenshiro Kihara, will be presented from 13 May (Sat).
