Kotaro Abe
Nanzuka is pleased to present "Effigy," the third solo exhibition of new works by Kotaro Abe at our gallery. The exhibition will be held at Nanzuka 2G and curated by Aki Inoue.

Kotaro Abe was born in Oita Prefecture in 1988. He graduated from the Department of Painting at Musashino Art University in 2015 and has since continued his artistic endeavors in Tokyo.

Growing up in a family engaged in fish farming, Abe developed a unique form of "paints" by imitating the process of making fish feed. He combined pigments and mediums with everyday food ingredients such as black sesame seeds and tapioca flour. Since his late teens during his prep school days, Abe has continued to create and evolve his works using this distinctive method.

In recent years, Abe has produced not only canvas paintings but also semi-three-dimensional works that resemble creatures or monsters, utilizing the unique textures that emerge from mixing food ingredients with paint. His process involves sketching images directly onto small whiteboards, drawing from the multitude of things he has seen, touched, and felt over the years. He then translates these sketches almost directly into his works, presenting what he has experienced through his art. Abe suggests that the title of this exhibition, "Effigy," may reflect portraits of his past self.

In this exhibition, Abe will present six new works. And an opening reception will be held at Nanzuka 2G on August 16th (Fri.) from 18:00 to 20:00, offering an opportunity for attendees to engage with the artist.
