Large Lantern Paintings

Fukuoka City Museum
Finished
In Fukuoka City, numerous deities and Buddhist figures are cherished in local traditions. During summer, ceremonies and prayers are held from dusk, creating a lively atmosphere with night stalls and stages. Along Hakata Bay, large lanterns are displayed during festivals. These lanterns, featuring dramatic warrior paintings or story scenes, measure about 2 by 4 meters. This exhibition will feature around 60 large lantern paintings, including those from Fukuoka Prefecture for the first time together.
