Lee Kang-So
This exhibition, which marks the artist's first solo exhibition in Japan in 22 years, will showcase approximately 8 new works by Lee Kang-So.

Lee Kang-So was born in Daegu, South Korea, in 1943. He graduated from the Painting Department of Seoul National University in 1965 and is currently based in Anseong, Gyeonggi-do. In the 1950s, the Art Informel movement flourished in Korea, led by the post-war first generation. Following this, Lee, as part of the subsequent generation, formed the avant-garde group "Shin Taesul" in 1969, distancing himself from the authoritative art scene in Seoul. In 1974, he organized the "Daegu Contemporary Art Festival" in his hometown of Daegu, contributing to the revitalization of experimental art in regional areas. The "Daegu Contemporary Art Festival" is now highly acclaimed as a platform where young artists produce avant-garde works. One of Lee's representative works exhibited at the Myeongdong Gallery in 1973, is "Disappearance; A Bar in the Gallery," a performance that arranged old tavern furniture and offered alcohol and snacks, attempting to share with the audience the creation and disappearance of moments.

Subsequently, Lee, who began researching painting, aimed to realize the process of performance on the plane of traditional painting. After experimenting with media in the 1970s, such as pulling threads from the canvas or using silkscreen printing, he began to explore new expressions detached from the habitual brushwork acquired in art education as the 1980s approached.

From the late 1980s, Lee's interest shifted towards a pure and lively nature. While characteristic motifs such as ducks, floating boats, and deer appear in his works from the 1990s onwards, Lee transcends the depiction of these subjects and sublimates his expression to follow the "brushstrokes" and "vitality." By abandoning the desire to depict and use a clear mind and flexible body, the world born from uninterrupted brushwork reflects the Korean concept of "Feng Liu." Lee aims to depart from a Western worldview and share the intuition of truth and tranquility with the audience. His works are not merely a means of conveying thoughts but rather a structure where the energy of participation and dialogue interact.

A collection of works from Lee's contemporaries was exhibited under the title "Only the Young: Experimental Art in Korea, 1960s–1970s" at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea in May last year and at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in August. Furthermore, in February of this year, it is scheduled to tour the Hammer Museum at UCLA. Additionally, a large-scale retrospective exhibition of Lee is planned at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea in October this year.

A reception with the artist during Lee's visit to Japan will be held on Friday, March 8th, starting at 4 p.m.
