Edward Allington (1951-2017), who came to prominence as part of the New British Sculpture movement, left an indelible legacy as a bridge between the British and Japanese art communities. His unwavering commitment to the study of modern Japanese sculpture and his long-standing role as a mentor to many Japanese students at the Slade School of Fine Art, University of London, bear witness to this.

This exhibition, a sequel to our inaugural show in 2022, brings together the works of Japanese and British artists who were under his tutelage. The exhibition places a particular emphasis on ‘Drawing and Sculpture’, the two pillars of Allington’s artistic oeuvre, and explores how these artists from the UK and Japan, who are the inheritors of his artistic legacy, have engaged with these mediums. The exhibition seeks to illustrate how these emerging generations of artists, transcending national borders, have inspired and influenced one another, and in the process, nurtured their unique artistic expressions.
