Makoto Honda has long been painting "landscapes that cannot be put into words," drawing on his own sensibilities and experiences through the medium of painting.
His works evoke a quiet sense of time and an atmosphere of the extraordinary, where the boundaries between dream and reality seem to dissolve.
They also naturally express inexplicable emotions that brush the heart in fleeting moments, images that emerge in the mind, and fragments of forgotten memories.
Delicate elements seem to quietly lurk beneath the surface of his works, as if refusing to be pinned down to any fixed meaning.
This exhibition presents a series of works created using the method of automatism, where the story of the artist’s own everyday life—at the blurred boundary between reality and surreality—is unconsciously woven onto the canvas.
Wandering through the world of stories spun by the artist, guided by your own unconscious, may become one of the pleasures of viewing these works.
The exhibition will run from 23 May (Fri) to 16 June (Mon) 2025.
