Masamitsu Shigeta
We are pleased to announce that parcel will be hosting a solo exhibition by Masamitsu Shigeta titled Patterns. Based in New York, Masamitsu captures the shapes and colors of the many cities he has visited on canvas, continuously presenting works that encapsulate these landscapes within the frames he creates himself.

Masamitsu Shigeta's work is inspired by both natural and architectural elements found within cities, and he values the daily drawings made during the process of completing each piece. He observes the places he visits, repeatedly sketching moments that catch his eye in his notebook. These studies employ various materials, such as watercolor, pen, and colored pencil, vividly capturing the scenes and impressions he experiences. He also enjoys the unexpected developments that occur during the process, like accidental smudges or blurs. Through this process, he traces the path leading to his final artworks. Each canvas, therefore, breathes with the rhythm of its creation.

Additionally, Masamitsu handcrafts frames inspired by each painting, making them an integral part of the artwork.

This reveals the sculptural aspect that plays an important role in what might initially appear to be purely two-dimensional works. The frames serve as a bridge between the painting and the physical world, breaking down the divide between the depicted scene and reality, expanding the subject into the gallery space. Masamitsu’s paintings, where distant landscapes depicted on canvas are brought back to the viewer's immediate vicinity through the surrounding frame, evoke a sense of liberation from the physical constraints that usually bind us, such as place, distance, and borders.

In this exhibition, Masamitsu will showcase new works featuring the streets of New York, where he is based, as well as landscapes from Switzerland, Hong Kong and Mexico, where he stayed in the last couple of years. Masamitsu will also present works from the city scapes of Japan for the first time. Each of these charming and evocative pieces reminds us that beauty can often be found in familiar places. This marks the first time that Masamitsu Shigeta’s works will be shown in Japan. We hope you will enjoy this opportunity to view them.
