Masaru Aikawa
eitoeiko is pleased to announce In Developing, a solo exhibition by Masaru Aikawa, on view from December 13 through January 31.The exhibition features Aikawa’s ongoing series of photographic works created with UV resin—a method the artist has been developing since 2020 in an effort to liberate the photographic image from its conventional supports. Nearly two centuries have passed since Niépce captured the view from his window, and the evolution of photographic techniques has increasingly been shaped by digital technology. Within the process by which light-borne information becomes an image, Aikawa questions the final act of viewing photographs through fixed media such as photographic paper, printed matter, monitors, or smartphones. Just as a painter requires a brush, pigment and canvas to depict a landscape or a figure, he asks whether light itself truly needs physical support. Aikawa’s works continue to form images for as long as light is present. Existing quite literally In Developing, they invite viewers to witness the essential flicker in which an image emerges from light—a moment that lies at the core of photography.
