Masterpieces from the Uehara Collection - The Coming of Spring

Uehara Museum of Art
Finished
The fragrance of flowers, the songs of birds, the gentle touch of the wind- nature heralds the arrival of spring. And within paintings, the changes of the season are also hidden.

"Sakura and Hachiman Castle Ruins" was painted by Yasui Sotaro shortly after his return from Beijing during World War II. In the summer of 1944 (Showa 19), Yasui traveled to Manchuria for an art exhibition jury, stopping in Beijing to create this piece. Stricken with illness in Beijing towards the end of the year, he recuperated there and returned to Japan in March of the following year. Soon after, he evacuated to Yorii Town, Saitama Prefecture, where he painted this landscape. The beautiful view evokes the murmuring of the Arakawa River flowing beneath the Hachiman Castle Ruins, the tickling scent of spring, and the caress of the wind blowing through the sky. Even in the difficult times of war, seasons pass, and a new spring arrives.

This exhibition introduces paintings that evoke the arrival of spring, including Yasui Sotaro's "Sakura and Hachiman Castle Ruins," recently acquired, Ryuzaburo Umehara's "Enoura, Remnant Moon," which heralds the approach of spring with the winter west wind blowing in Izu-Shizuura, Kunitaro Suda's "Weeping Cherry Blossoms" and Taikan Yokoyama's "Night Sakura," where sakura blooms emerge from the darkness, as well as Pissarro's "Eragny Meadow" and Monet's "House with Thatched Roof," which evoke the warm scent of the season. Enjoy the arrival of the new season from the Uehara Collection.
