Masterpieces of the Homma Family

Homma Museum of Art
Finished
With the prosperity of Sakata Minato during the Edo period (1603-1868), the Homma family made a lot of money through three businesses: commerce, finance, and landownership, and became known as a wealthy merchant representing eastern Japan and the largest landowner in Japan.

The Homma family invested their private fortune in social projects, including Sakata's economy, culture, education, and welfare, and left behind numerous accomplishments. The Homma family also made efforts in financial reform by supporting the Shonai and Yonezawa clans and other Tohoku clans.

This exhibition introduces a selection of valuable items that the Homma family received and passed down from feudal lords and other important government officials.

In addition, the exhibition will also display works that are said to be the favorite possessions of Mitsuoka III (1732-1801), the founder of the Homma family.
