Matsue, the Center of Ancient Izumo

Matsue History Museum
Finished
The Tawayama Site, located in the southern part of Matsue in Shimane Prefecture, is a massive ruin with a triple moat enclosing a small space on the top of a mountain that is thought to have been the site of a festival during the Yayoi period. The Jigode site, where a moat surrounded a village, was discovered near the Tawayama site. In the Kofun period (tumulus period), many tumuli were built in the southern suburbs of Matsue, called the Iyu area, including the Yamashiro Futagozuka tumulus, the largest in the prefecture. Eventually, the Kokufu and Kokubunji were established as the center of Izumo Province.

This exhibition focuses on artifacts excavated in the southern suburbs of Matsue and traces how the area of Iyu became the center of ancient Izumo after the appearance of the Tawayama and Jigode sites in the late Early to early Middle Yayoi Period.
