Maw has been making its iconic smiley face character, MikeL (Michael), appear all over the streets of Tokyo. No matter how severe the social situation, Maw has maintained his own style for more than 15 years, and his method of telling everything with MikeL's expressions and traces is truly simple and even graceful.
In this exhibition, "Double," MikeL appears in a way that turns the so-called concept of painting and its techniques inside out. The theme of the exhibition, "Double," is a contrast between MikeL and another character, and the work asks the viewer questions from the external representation (symbol) of the character.
Are the representations that MikeL sees (or follows) real? How do the characters really look when we change our stereotypes and perspectives? If we look at MikeL, we recognize Maw. It can be said that MikeL is a symbol of Maw, a trace, a presence, or a signifier.
MikeL is sometimes a mockery of the world, sometimes a smiling symbol, and at other times a unique symbol that can evoke a variety of emotions in the viewer. Always looking at us with the same iconic expression, MikeL attracts people with his mysterious charm and makes us feel like we are having a little conversation with this enigmatic artist.
