Mayu Ishikura
IG Photo Gallery will hold the exhibition "Yorimichi" by Mayu Ishikura from March 12th, 2024 (Tuesday) onwards.

Ishikura is an artist who has been creating monochrome fine print works. "Yorimichi" is also a piece that captures a "public bar" located in a certain place in Tokyo in black and white.

Public bars in Japan have been at the center of drinking culture, sometimes serving as a community where strangers meet, share drinks, and share their hearts.

Ishikura himself has been a regular at one of these bars for many years, building relationships with regular customers.

The inspiration for taking photographs came when one of the regular customers passed away, prompting Ishikura to want to preserve this place in photographs. Let's quote Ishikura's own words:

"I started taking pictures to remember the deceased (including past regulars and friends). It was also an attempt to recall the people I met through photography. While photographs cannot fill the void left by those who have passed away, I thought that recognizing the absence and incorporating it into daily life might be possible, and that became the axis of this work."

In his previous works, Ishikura has also created pieces to encapsulate the time he spent in them. In "Yorimichi," he mentions that he sometimes discovered photos he didn't remember taking, as he was taking them while drinking. It's because there are no memories that you can create your own story from the photographs.

The desire to preserve memories and the stories that begin where memories are lost may seem contradictory at first, but by combining them through photography, Ishikura's "Yorimichi" is born.

In creating this work, Ishikura attempted both conventional lens photography and pinhole photography with a digital camera. Through trial and error of how to "alienate" the familiar place of a pub, the resulting works evoke the image of a pub in the minds of each viewer.

As part of the exhibition, a talk session (to be streamed online) is planned. Please tune in to the exhibition and related events.
