Mayuko Inui
This exhibition, Mayuko Inui's first solo show, will explore the possibility of self-transformation depicted by the ever-changing body and attempt to reconstruct the world through the exhibition of videos, photographs, and objects, as well as talk events and performances during the exhibition period.

Inui has been presenting her discomfort with gender norms and questions about sexual identity latent in everyday life through performances using her own body.

In works based on folk tales and folktales, Inui interweaves song, acting, gender dialogue, and interviews to create variations on the stories of the past, and to create opportunities to reconsider the contemporary situation.

In this work, the performers sing their songs as Kaguyahime from "Taketori Monogatari" and Kuzunoha from "Kuzunoha Densetsu" (The Legend of Kuzu-no-ha), confronting their own identities and opening up new ways to relate to others. Other ritualistic performances involving the creation of costumes and queer beings attempt to dismantle the categorization imposed by norms.

The title of this exhibition, "Tamamayu," refers to a single cocoon created by two or more silkworms working together. Philosopher Emanuele Coccia says that the cocoon is a space that transforms the self as well as the world (metamorphosis). Inui's artistic practice is very similar to the movement of the cocoon in that it attempts to reconstruct the self and the world while constantly transforming itself and disturbing its attributes.

The works in this exhibition, while reflecting different contents, hint at the coexistence of the various ways of life that Inui's shifting body, like a "cocoon," represents. Viewers will encounter a moment of interpenetration between past and present, self and other, through the various voices coming from the soft and delicate movement.
