In commemoration of the release of the film "Viva Niki: The Road to the Tarot Garden," directed, photographed, and written by photographer Michiko Matsumoto, the exhibition "Portrait of Niki de Saint Phalle" will be held. A monochrome, serene world created through the decade-long spiritual interaction between the two artists will be featured. The exhibition includes works from the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. Additionally, a trailer for the film will be shown at the venue ahead of its release.
Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002), a French-born sculptor, spent 20 years creating the sculpture garden "Tarot Garden" in Tuscany, Italy. After moving past her tormented works of the 1960s, Niki created the cheerful and open female figures of the "Nana" series, which eventually expanded into the magical world of the Tarot Garden. Photographer Michiko Matsumoto, who has captured portraits of artists worldwide, began photographing Niki de Saint Phalle in 1981, continuing for over a decade. As she began contemplating her life's unfinished business, she felt the urge to face Niki once more and embarked on making the film. She filmed outdoor sculptures and structures across Europe, the U.S., and Japan, also writing the script. The film features interviews with eight related individuals, and includes footage of Niki, her daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter, making it a documentary of the encounter between two female artists. The film will premiere at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum’s first-floor hall in September 2024, followed by a roadshow.
