Michio Fukuoka
Sakai Plaza of Rikyu and Akiko will hold a memorial solo exhibition for the sculptor Michio Fukuoka, who passed away at the age of 87 on November 15, 2023. This will be the first solo exhibition of his work held in Sakai City.

Michio Fukuoka was born in Sakai City in 1936. He spent his childhood in China until the end of World War II and returned to Japan amidst the post-war chaos. After graduating from Sakai Municipal Industrial High School, he studied sculpture at the Osaka Municipal Institute of Fine Arts. From his first solo exhibition at the Hakuhou Gallery in 1958, he showcased his works in museums and galleries both in Japan and abroad, primarily based in the Kansai region. In 2005, he declared himself a "non-creating sculptor" and continued to explore his unique methods of expression until his later years.

From the Sakai City collection, "Sand9," a work from Fukuoka's solo exhibition will be displayed, and the representative wave sculpture "Masanda Pond." "Sand9" is part of the "Sand" series, inspired by the unintended shapes created by pouring plaster into the sand of Sakai Beach. "Masanda Pond" is named after a pond near his studio in Kawachinagano.

During the turbulent social climate of the 1960s, Fukuoka questioned himself, asking, "Is what I'm doing of any use to society?" He found the role of the artist in "sensing the times ahead of anyone else." Reflecting on the 1960s when he made pink balloons, he felt "a completely different kind of anxiety and apprehension," leading to the creation of "Black Balloon" in 2002. His works, such as "Angry Earthworms," in which hermaphroditic earthworms sound a warning to human society, sharply interpret the times as "avant-garde."

Additionally, in the restored tea room tea utensils created at the request of Fukuoka's daughter, a ceramic artist, will be exhibited.
