Artists

Akira Kurosaki, Hitoshi Karasawa, Kenji Kitagawa, Lee Ufan et al.
Fukushima Prefecture's Date City-born psychiatrist, Motohisa Kaneko, is also known as a collector of contemporary Japanese prints and ex-libris (bookplates). In the 2022 fiscal year, the museum received a donation of 130 works and a deposit of over 400 works from him. Among these, a remarkable collection is the one with a strong attachment to the woodblock print artist Akira Kurosaki, totaling 90 works. This collection is invaluable because it allows us to trace Kurosaki's artistic style from his early years to his later years.

This exhibition explores the entirety of his collection through approximately 300 works, which include not only those by Akira Kurosaki but also artists who have represented the Japanese printmaking scene after the war, such as the woodcut print artist Hitoshi Karasawa, the copperplate artist Kenji Kitagawa, and Lee Ufan, a proponent of the "mono-ha" movement, one of the trends in contemporary Japanese art. The collection even includes posters by Marc Chagall.
