Midori Takayama
Rui Takayama is a sculptor who draws lines and carves wood to reveal margins and creates forms from the relationship between the lines and margins.

When she first began carving wood, she drew lines and carved based on the undulations and undulations of the wood, intersecting the annual rings with the artist's time to create works in which the wood is the main axis. In recent years, her interest has expanded to include lines and two-dimensional elements that emerge from his own life and human hand gestures, and he has produced many works with motifs of books, letters, typefaces, literary works, and textual drawings. There is a sense of wonder in the transformation of lines from two-dimensional to three-dimensional.

She draws lines on the wood, carves them with a chisel, and makes the margins appear three-dimensional. How do the fluctuation of the line and the margin make the shape appear? In the lines he chooses, there is an awareness of the traffic and intersection of time, space, and dimension that is unique to Takayama, and the basis of his work is consistent. The chisel marks on the carved wood reflect her gaze and observation of the material, and the movement of her hands as she attempts to gather and confirm the feeling she has gained from the material.

This exhibition connects her early works with those of recent years. Recently, she has been focusing on lines that do not have specific meanings, such as letters and symbols, and will present new relief works carved with improvised, messy, and monotonous lines.
