Artists

Mika Shinagawa
Mika Shinagawa is a painting artist based in Osaka and Kyoto. She has repeatedly painted motifs of children, plants, and insects, expressing a unique world that combines the realism of Western painting with the flat expression of Japanese painting.

In Shinagawa's large 5-meter painting "Day" (c. 1911), a reference to Odilon Redon's "Day" and "Night" (c. 1911), the mountains in the background have been replaced by Unzen Fugendake, a mountain visible from Shinagawa's native Kumamoto, and in the foreground is his child as the main subject of the painting.

The work, which was painted after her pregnancy and childbirth during the unstable days of the COVID-19 pandemic, depicts an innocent, small being, but at the same time evokes the grandeur of history and the universe, which is connected to the child's eyes, the butterfly's flapping wings, and the mountain range in the background.

Shinagawa says, "I draw pictures to think about the things I don't understand or find difficult to solve in my daily life."
