Miki Shinobu
Kameido Art Center is pleased to present Kūchū – Chūkū, a solo exhibition by Miki Shinobu.

Since childhood, Shinobu has possessed a unique perceptual ability to grasp sounds as “positions” in space—a form of spatial synesthesia. She transforms this internal sensory experience into visual expressions through her distinctive artistic practice.

Her works begin with perceiving the sounds of a given place as “coordinates,” which she visualizes based on her own system of rules. Guided by a spatial sense where, for instance, high-pitched sounds are mapped to the upper right and low-pitched ones to the lower left, she overlays sound recordings with sketches to create visual compositions. These resulting images—rooted in the breath of each location and her own bodily perception—can be seen as quiet and delicate “sound maps.”

This exhibition features new works created from sounds collected around the Kameido area, alongside earlier sculptural and painted pieces. Following the connections between points emitted by sound, Shinobu visualizes the overlapping of time and space through an approach that seamlessly traverses media such as painting, sculpture, and bookmaking.

We hope this exhibition offers visitors a chance to engage with the invisible structures of “sound” that reside within the artist—structures that embody layers of time and spatial depth.
