Mikiko Azuma
This exhibition, marking Mikiko Azuma's return after six years, showcases her recent works, transitioning from printmaking to collage using finely cut paper fragments.

Azuma has worked with paper as her primary material since her university days, where she specialized in printmaking. Over the years as an artist, the materials for her drawings gradually evolved, leading her to use finely cut chips created by piercing holes with a needle or cutting up everyday paper packaging materials.

Azuma's expression, which finds reality in depicting the life cycle in nature using industrial products adorned with designs based on the assumption of consumption that has become commonplace in modern life, was born out of her desire to connect with the fundamental natural world while living in the city.

While tracing the evolution of printing techniques from the printmaking Azuma has learned, defined by finely expressed halftone dots, to redefine the smallest units by finely cutting them, she creates a new cycle.

In the new works presented in this exhibition, the support has also changed. Rather than drawing on fresh paper, she uses a base made by layering thin paper on drawings created in the past, embedding a temporal layer. By depicting seemingly insignificant and transient things such as ancient handcrafts, the life cycle of various flora and fauna, and the changing landscapes, Azuma creates a more intimate relationship between the artist's interests and the passage of time on the artwork.
