Mitsumasa Anno
Since his world debut at the age of 42 with his picture book "Fushiginae", Anno Mitsumasa has been called "the world's Anno" and "a landscape painter who has traveled the world". He left behind many watercolor paintings with a gentle atmosphere of pale colors.

Having had the opportunity to sketch the gardens of the residence of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress (the current Emperor and Empress), Anno painted 130 watercolor paintings of seasonal flowers and grasses as his subjects. In 2013, the book "Flowers of the Imperial Palace" was published.

Then, in 2019, the year of the change from Heisei to Reiwa, Anno spent a year painting the flowers and plants in the Kyoto Imperial Gardens at the Kyoto Imperial Palace.

The Kyoto Imperial Gardens is home to approximately 700 species of plants. Anno, at the age of 93, created 26 paintings of flowers and plants that he had cultivated with the idea of "letting the natural vegetation in the rice paddies and satoyama remain in its natural state."
