Mitsuo Kano
Mitsuo Kano (1933-), a self-taught copperplate engraver, began showing his work in the mid-1950s, and in the 1960s became one of Japan's leading artists, having gained recognition at numerous international exhibitions including the Ljubliana International Print Biennale and the Tokyo International Print Biennale.

His early works were mainly monochrome copperplate prints evoking plants and creatures, followed by metal prints, lithographs, and objects. He has also collaborated with poets such as Shuzo Takiguchi and Makoto Ooka, and his wide-ranging activities include stage design and bookwork. In recent years, he has had solo exhibitions at the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art (2000), the Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura, Kanagawa (2013), CCGA Contemporary Graphic Art Center, Fukushima (2017), and "Shuzo Takiguchi / Mitsuo Kano, Semiotech of Sea Swallow, 2019," Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art.

This exhibition will feature 30 of the 57 oil paintings created as a series in 1999. The title of the work, "The Tale of the Heike," describes the human story of the rise and fall of the Heike clan, and is said to have had the greatest influence on the Noh play. Kano, who is interested in Noh drama, developed various images for this series, which, although small in size, are layered with dense colors.

Kano's works were exhibited at Galerie Humanité Tokyo and Galerie Humanité Nagoya at the time, and this exhibition marks the first time in 24 years.
