Mitsuru Tokutomi
Mitsuru Tokutomi (1966-2001), born in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, presents his contemplations on the slight gap between perception and recognition, and on the form and identity of objects, in his works with a vivid touch. After graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts, Tokutomi received a scholarship to study abroad as an emerging artist in Aichi Prefecture and moved to London, where he was inspired by the Young British Artists (YBAs) that were then making waves in the art scene. He began to formulate unique thoughts by connecting his physical sense of scale with his astronomical sense of distance and size. However, in 2000, he was diagnosed with acute leukemia and returned to Japan, where he passed away in 2001 at the young age of 35, despite high expectations for his future career.

Since fiscal year 2016, the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art and the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art has been researching and acquiring works kept by the artist's bereaved family. This retrospective exhibition, the first in 17 years since “Plus, Minus, Infinity" (Tomio Koyama Gallery, 2006), will present a full picture of Mitsuru Tokutomi, an artist who created a wide variety of works in painting, sculpture, and installation despite his short activity period, through an exhibition of all works in the collections of both museums. This retrospective exhibition will introduce the whole picture of Mitsuru Tokutomi, an artist who produced a wide variety of works, including paintings, sculptures, and installations, despite his short career.
