Miyako Ishiuchi
This exhibition features works captured by Miyako Ishiuchi, depicting images from the Kawasaki City Citizens Museum collection that were damaged and covered in mold after the 2019 Typhoon No. 19. These works were first presented at the exhibition "Visible/Invisible, The Fate of Photography" held at the Ohtani Memorial Museum of Art in Nishinomiya in 2021. Including works captured afterward, this marks the first solo exhibition under the title "The Drowned."

Ishiuchi's photographic journey, which began with personal items belonging to her mother in 2005's "Mother's," has expanded to include "Hiroshima," capturing clothing and belongings of Hiroshima atomic bomb survivors, and "Frida by Ishiuchi," focusing on Frida Kahlo's personal effects in Mexico. "The Drowned" can be seen as part of this lineage. Notably, it reflects the present moment more than any other work, as it was prompted by natural disasters caused by global climate change, specifically the issue of climate change-induced disasters.

This marks Ishiuchi's seventh solo exhibition at the gallery since "ChromosomeXY" in 1996. Ishiuchi recently stated, "I have always said that my works are not documentary; they are personal expressions created through art. However, I have come to realize the essence of photography as a means of recording and conveying, and I am reflecting on various aspects." As a gallery that has primarily focused on hosting exhibitions centered around "photography" works, this exhibition provides an opportunity to deeply contemplate photography, expression, and Miyako Ishiuchi's photography.
