VAGUE KOBE is honoured to present the upcoming exhibition 'Mizarashi: From the Collection of Shinichiro Yoshida’.

This exhibition will feature a selection of mizarashi fabrics, carefully chosen by artist and natural fabric researcher Shinichiro Yoshida from his personal collection, which he has amassed over more than 40 years. The exhibition will also include hemp fabrics and pieces from his past work, ’White’.

‘Mizarashi’ refers to fabrics in their natural, unbleached state. The mizarashi fabrics in this exhibition were handwoven between the Edo and late Meiji periods and were widely used as workwear due to their exceptional durability, which remains intact over a century later. Commonly known as ‘kinari’, the term also conveys the meaning of 'birth' (in the ‘ki’ part of the word). Through exposure to sunlight, these natural brown and beige-toned fabrics gradually turn 'white' over time.

This exhibition harmonises the timeless quality of these natural fabrics with the earth-plastered walls of VAGUE KOBE, dedicating the space to showcasing the beauty and strength of natural materials. Mizarashi, which transforms with the passage of time, reflects the changing nature of life and reminds us of the importance of living in harmony with the natural world.
