Artists

Morio Shinoda
Contemporary artist Morio Shinoda's metal sculptures, primarily focused on the Tension and Compression (T C) series, create a mysterious space by fixing metal masses hollowly with the tension and pressure of steel wires. Shinoda's work has received high international acclaim.

He considers Marcel Duchamp's invention, the "Readymade," as an important element in his work. Duchamp's "Fountain" is one of the most famous Readymades, which Shinoda interprets as "a transformation of space by placing a readymade object in an unexpected location." Picasso also created a bull's head using a bicycle saddle and handlebars ("Bull's Head"/1942) later on.

Shinoda's concept of "Neo-Readymade" involves using elements of his works as well, not solely relying on existing objects, and developing them as parts of TC or as metal sculpture works.

"When I happened to be at the University of Tsukuba, I created artworks with computers, and with a small budget, I was able to make hundreds of the same thing. The early 1950s was a good time to create artwork using computers. Nowadays, computer-controlled artworks are commonplace, but at that time, using computers itself was rare. A large number of BBC staff came to Tsukuba to interview us because we were using computers to control things."

At the age of 93 this year, Shinoda continues to create with undiminished creativity. This exhibition will feature seven new works as well as past materials, and they will be available for exhibition and sale.
