Motoaki Kano and the Masterpieces of Daianzenji Temple

Fukui City History Museum
Finished
Motoaki Kano was an official painter of the Fukui domain in the early Edo period. Kano was active during the period when Matsudaira Mitsumichi, the fourth lord of the Fukui domain, built Daianzenji Temple (Tanoya-machi, Fukui City) with the famous Rinzai Zen priest Daifu Souchiku as a guest. For this reason, Daianzenji Temple preserves many works by Kano donated by feudal warriors, in addition to the fusuma paintings in the main hall. In addition, the Temple has many paintings and tools donated by successive generations of Fukui domain lords, feudal warriors, and their families, providing a glimpse into the culture of Fukui during the Edo period.

This exhibition introduces two of Daianzenji's valuable cultural properties: a work by Kano, designated as a Fukui Prefecture-designated cultural property in May of this year, and an oshi-e maki by Morikage Kusumi, who was active at about the same time as Kano and painted a screen with oshi-e illustrations of flowers and birds in historical events.
