Kameido Art Center is pleased to present the exhibition “SUPER NICE THANKASS” by the art project THANKASS, led by pixel artists Motocross Saito and Hermippe.

THANKASS is a loosely connected project centered around a sense of soft solidarity, exploring cultures, people, and the very relationships with them that allow us to feel a “real, tangible presence”—something that feels like it’s right there.

Originally, “THANKASS” was a term casually used among friends, but the project seeks to turn it into a kind of anonymous stamp of affirmation for “someone doing something interesting that isn’t widely known.”

This exhibition features a wide range of works by Motocross Saito and Hermippe , including pixel art created from their unique perspectives, alongside prints, drawings, and paintings executed in a variety of techniques.

Both artists incorporate methods such as cyanotype, risograph, and screen printing to develop expressions that step outside the confines of the studio, embracing the atmosphere of the city and society around them.

Their works are infused not only with personal emotions and memories, but also with fragments of the street—discomforts encountered while walking through the city at night, unconscious behaviors of people, and invisible relationships. By reconstructing these urban scenes and intersecting gazes through diverse materials and techniques, the exhibition visualizes the THANKASS project’s core theme: the connection with “something beyond oneself.”

Also included in the exhibition is a reshaped used skateboard deck by Mr. Oyama, a skater and original member of THANKASS. These decks, bearing traces of daily use and the physical body, are not crafted to be shown, but rather embody the raw relationship between individuals and the city.

In addition, the show features a collaborative flower arrangement created with a flower stylist who is a close friend of the artists. Drawing on the artists’ backgrounds, their visual styles, the street sensibility underlying THANKASS, and the types of plants they envisioned using, the stylist crafted a special arrangement that inspired both artists to create new pixel artworks from their respective perspectives.

Moreover, based on the image of the exhibition, the artists invited a roaster friend to select and roast coffee beans, and designed labels for the packaging themselves. Through these collaborations, THANKASS embraces and puts into practice its diverse cultural backgrounds and sense of solidarity from multiple angles.

The name “THANKASS” itself—combining “thank” and “ass”—carries the tone of an inside joke or password among friends, while also alluding to the historical “Sanka” people of Japan, who lived nomadic lives and developed their own unique culture.

It suggests an alternative value system—“This isn’t something we need to put out into the world, but within our circle, it’s insanely fun.”

“SUPER NICE THANKASS” is an attempt to carefully render such unclassifiable forms of expression and relationships from the perspective of the “pixel = the smallest unit.”

Deeply personal, yet oddly resonant—the THANKASS logo serves as a kind of tag, linking together such works and individuals. This exhibition aims to become a space where that connection can take shape.
