Artists

Julian Stair, Shoji Kamoda
Julian Stair (1955-) is a prominent contemporary British ceramic artist born in Bristol, United Kingdom. He studied ceramics at Camberwell School of Art in 1974 and continued his ceramic education at the Royal College of Art (RCA) from 1978.

Known as a darling of modern Japanese ceramics, Shoji Hamada (1933-1983), born in Kishiwada, Osaka, entered the Ceramics Department of Kyoto City University of Arts in 1952 and studied ceramics. A commonality between these two ceramic artists is their ongoing dedication to creating "vessels" (utensils). This exhibition explores the inevitability of the vessels created by both artists through a total of 50 works, featuring 25 pieces each from Julian Stair and Shoji Hamada.

As part of the Mashiko International Craft Exchange Project, Julian Stair will be invited for a residency during the exhibition period. Additionally, the works created during this stay will be exhibited on the premises of the museum and at the former Shoji Hamada residence.
