Ryushi Memorial Museum
Finished

Artists

Taikan Yokoyama, Ryushi Kawabata, Gyokudo Kawai, Ryushi Kawabata et al.
The Ryushi Memorial Museum was built in front of the residence of Japanese-style painter Ryushi Kawabata (1885-1966) to celebrate his Order of Cultural Merit and his 60th birthday, which Kawabata celebrates in 2023. This exhibition celebrates the anniversary and introduces the dramatic relationship between Taikan Yokoyama (1868-1958), a leading figure in the world of Japanese-style painting and a well-known figure among art fans, and Kawabata. Kawabata's career as a Japanese-style painter began in the Taisho era (1912-1926) when he became active in the revived Inten (Japan Art Exhibition), led by Taikan and others.

In this exhibition, we will see Taikan's masterpieces such as "Selfless" (1897, Mizuno Museum of Art; exhibited only in the second half of the exhibition), "Touyasuji" (circa 1919, Yokosuka Museum of Art), a painting of Tao Yuanming, and "A Day on the Pacific" (1952, National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo), a late work in which a dragon rises from the waves to Fuji, and "Japan, the Land of God" (1935, Meito Art Museum), a painting of the Japanese goddess of art (1935, Meito Art Museum collection) and other Fuji paintings will be exhibited. In addition, works by Kawabata will be on display, including "The Origin of Reisen" (1916, Eiseibunko collection), for which he received the Kogyu Prize at the Inten Exhibition, and "Tidal Wave" (1937, Takashimaya Museum of Art collection), a large-scale work commissioned after his withdrawal from the Inten Exhibition. The exhibition will shed light on the drama of these two artists, which should be preserved in the history of Japanese art.

Taikan Yokoyama "Hotei" (ca. 1902-06, Mizuno Museum of Art collection) will be exhibited in the first half of the exhibition, and Taikan Yokoyama "Muhgo" (1897, Mizuno Museum of Art collection) in the second half.
