NHK Taiga Drama Special Exhibition: Dōsuru Ieyasu (What will you do, Ieyasu?)

Shizuoka City Museum of Art
Finished
Ieyasu Tokugawa (1543-1616), who continued to find answers to a succession of unexpected events in a war-torn Japan without running away, ushered in a period of peace and tranquillity. This exhibition explores the battles and events that marked important turning points in Ieyasu's life through related paintings and documents. The show also traces the footsteps of Ieyasu from his birth to his enshrinement as a deity of Tōshō Daigongen after his death, through documents related to those who pressed Ieyasu to make decisions by asking “dōsuru (what will you do?)” such as Shingen Takeda, Nobunaga Oda, and Hideyoshi Toyotomi. Also displayed are armor and swords, as well as tea ceremony utensils, stationery, and costumes that Ieyasu loved to use in his later years in Sumpu (the present-day central area of Shizuoka), highlighting the true nature of Ieyasu.
