Nagatoshi Shibata "Prayer of Love and Comfort"

Kobayashi Kokei Memorial Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Nagatoshi Shibata
Shibata was captivated by Kunio Yanagita's writings during high school, sparking a lifelong interest in folklore. Travels to India, Nepal, and Iraq as a student deepened exploration of local beliefs on life and death. After graduating from Tama Art University in 1976, Shibata won the Sogakai Award and became a member of the Sogakai in 1988. Shibata painted "prayer landscapes," depicting themes like human existence, medieval pilgrimage routes, and hometown scenery. Shibata also designed stained glass windows for public buildings. This exhibition features Japanese-style paintings and stained glass works from the museum's collection to introduce the "prayer of love and comfort" inherent in Shibata's work.
