Nanga" refers to Japanese paintings done in black ink and light colors. They are sometimes called "Bunjin-ga" (literati paintings) because they were painted in admiration of people called "literati" in China. It was a genre of painting that became very popular in Kyoto from the latter half of the Edo period through the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods. Nanga painters mastered the use of ink, added light colors, and added Chinese poetry, playing with the ideal world in their minds and their hearts. It can be said that they tried to depict the essence of things, rather than realistically following the form of things.

In this exhibition, rare works from private collections will be on display to explain how to view and enjoy nanga, which can be difficult to understand. The exhibition also features works by famous painters such as Suiun Komuro, Kai Kozan, Seiran Kawabe, and Kouha Yasuda, whose works are rarely seen even in museums.
