This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Nanpu Katayama, who suffered from the disaster in Sugamo, went to Asakusa and Ueno to record the damage and reconstruction of the area, later compiling 31 paintings into three volumes. The paintings convey the anguish and sorrow of the people of the time and their mutual support.

In addition, 12 paintings by Katayama and his contemporaries will be exhibited for the first time. The first half of the exhibition, until September 10, features Japanese landscapes by Taikan Yokoyama, Gyokudo Kawai, Shiko Munakata, and Shingo Yamada, while the second half, from September 13, features paintings of people, animals, and plants by Seiho Takeuchi, Kiyotaka Kaburaki, Hoan Kosugi, Seison Maeda, and Yoharu Yamaguchi.
